One of the most common hypotheticals in the realm of time
travel fiction is the Baby Hitler scenario: Travelling back in time to kill
Hitler as an infant before he grows into one of history’s most notorious
dictators. There are a lot of ethical dilemmas and potential consequences that
spring out of this idea, but one of the lesser-discussed ones is
the possibility that making the kill successfully wouldn’t solve everything. That
while the very specific threat Hitler posed may be prevented, something just as
bad, or worse, could take its place in human history. It is this idea that
forms part of the core of today’s feature, and it makes for one of the most
welcome surprises of the year.

The Forest (2016) - Movie Review
Yep, there’s two
films about Tokyo’s Suicide Forest that got a release this year. I know that
the studio system tends to release similar films around the same time, but even
still, this is an incredibly niche thing to make even a single film about, let
alone two. That said, my reasoning for looking at both of those films today
should be fairly obvious, considering how underwhelming Sea Of Trees turned out. Add to that how this is going to be a supernatural horror film,
rather than the bland melodrama we got last time, and I’m willing to
give this idea another go. So, is this going to make proper use of the concept
or, by some anti-miracle, is this going to turn out even worse? Ugh. Let’s just
get into this thing already before the lack of engagement makes me pass out.

Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice (2016) - Movie Review
I briefly got into this same point when discussing The Death Of Superman Lives, but it bears repeating here: I seriously do not care about
Superman. Whether it’s not being brought up in the right place or era where his
brand of heroics would’ve left a proper impression, or just a general disdain
for overpowered main characters in action films, Superman has never struck me
as a character I should care to see on screen. This probably isn’t helped by
how the only Superman film I’ve seen in full is 2013’s Man Of Steel, which
might well be one of the most unheroic depictions of any superhero that doesn’t involve straight-up torture (Looking at
you, unaired pilot of Wonder Woman). Anyway, to paraphrase fellow reviewer and
frenemy of the blog Todd In The Shadows: “Being bulletproof is boring. I’d
rather be the guy who gets shot and still
keeps fighting.” Yeah, I’m backing Batman in this fight, in case it hasn’t
already been made clear. There’s quite a bit riding on this film, considering
it’s not only the latest reboot of the Caped Crusader but it’s also supposed to
serve as the entry point for a DC cinematic universe… but since this is
guaranteed to make money, I’m not going to pretend that that plan isn’t already going ahead. But should it, based on this initial
outing?
