Bo Burnham: The Inside Outtakes (2022) - Movie Review

Well, it looks like leftovers of already-reviewed movies are still on the table, after looking at Jackass 4.5 earlier this year, as Bo Burnham has released an outtakes reel for his (in my not-so-quiet opinion) genius production Inside onto his YouTube channel. Seems like a fitting place for this to turn up, given his internet content roots along with the emphatically homespun production values of the special itself. But while this could easily be written off as just a behind-the-scenes scrapbook of the main event, I’d argue that this shows Burnham finding more ways to be creative even in this capacity.

Ashens And The Polybius Heist (2020) - Movie Review

A few years ago, I made it a thing where I’d take time out in April to highlight my critical influences, namely YouTubers I obsessed over in my teens that got me interested in the work that I have spent the last six years populating this blog with. In lieu of a long-winded and likely painful detailing of why I don’t do that around here anymore (and from the looks of things never will again), let’s just say that I don’t have the same raging fanboy adoration for my influences that I used to have, and I try and stay away from discussing them here as best I can. But in all honesty, I’m willing to dip into that pool once again to discuss a YouTuber movie that is a nice breath of fresh air from the norm.

Nerve (2016) - Movie Review

Using game shows, and more recently augmented reality games, as a means of societal commentary is old hat by this point. Whether it’s the dark satire of Death Race 2000, the hyper-machismo of The Running Man or even the surreal tinge of comedy in Bad Wolf, an episode of Doctor Who, this isn’t anything new. Not that being tried-and-true is something to be instantly ashamed of; just that it means extra effort needs to be made in order for the work to stand out. Well, with the ever-increasing proclivity of the Internet and its many, many outlets, specifically social media, YouTube and even the fascination surrounding Pokémon Go!, maybe it’s time for such a commentary to be made anew. We can only hope that this film is capable of delivering on that. Spoiler alert: No, it isn’t; not by a long shot.

Top 20 JonTron Videos

Outside of the Angry Video Game Nerd, I’d have to say that JonTron and his Normal Boots cohorts are among the most influential Youtube game reviewers. I’d mark JonTron up as being a tad more destructive though, since so many creators have just taken to copying his jiggly video editing style and loud, incoherent ramblings. Seriously, the guy sounds like Christopher Walken on all the whiskey. And yet, both with his main series and his older work on Game Grumps, he seems to have mastered the art of saying and doing things that probably shouldn’t be funny, and yet for some reason are hilarious. He is one of the few that can nail “Random = comedy”. As such, here I am with my list of the Top 20 JonTron videos.
