Prey (2022) - Movie Review

I kinda regret how much slack I cut The Predator a few years back. Oh, don’t get me wrong, it’s as underwhelming an action flick as it gets, but I mean more specifically for how it treated autism. Flattery doesn’t tend to age very well, and that’s basically what it amounted to in that regard: Empty platitudes that were pretty asinine when you think them over for even a second. Cut to today’s film, which was being developed at the same time as Shane Black’s little misstep, and which has an approach to representation that has a bit more thought to it than ‘you’re the next phase in human evolution’.

The plot: Struggling chef Ronnie (Emily Taheny) gets a call from famous actor Henry (Eddie Izzard), one of her former employers, that he and his girlfriend Sophie (Vanessa Guide) will be in Sydney for a screening of his new film and if they wanted to catch up. Ronnie's boyfriend Jeff (Luke McKenzie) agrees and, as the four start to catch up, Ronnie struggles with telling Jeff that Henry not only used to be her lover, but that they might still have romantic feelings for each other.

Walking With Dinosaurs (2014) - Movie Review

While, at first glance, it’s an easy assumption to make that the director has sole creative control over a film, there’s also the matter of the producers to consider. The producers and production companies attached to a film are the money backing it, and they get a considerable amount of sway over what ends up in the final product; they can pull funding to the film if they don’t agree with what the director wants to do with it. Sure, you will occasionally get the auteurs that partially or even entirely fund their own movies themselves, but in the Hollywood system this isn’t always the case. Not to say that this is always a bad thing, mind you; just that it occasionally leads to bad decisions. To further illustrate this, let’s get started with today’s film: This is Walking With Dinosaurs.
