I feel like a john when discussing movies like this. Movies
where the main intent at its core is to shock people by any means necessary, in
this case made by a man who has basically built an entire career out of playing
edgelord for the arthouse crowd. While that methodology has at least brought
Lars Von Trier to some actual dramatic engagement on occasion, and even his
worst films show a level of effort that is the least I ask for from edgelords
(nothing worse than someone trying to shock you while putting in zero effort
whatsoever), the man’s status as provocateur makes watching his movies,
particularly his most recent ones, feel like I’m just playing into his hand.
And unfortunately, the same applies for this one.

The Party (2018) - Movie Review
The plot: Politician Janet (Kristin Scott Thomas), after being announced as the new shadow minister for health, is throwing a close-friends party at her house to celebrate. As the guests arrive, from her best friend April (Patricia Clarkson) and her partner Gottfried (Bruno Ganz) to professor Martha (Cherry Jones) and her wife Jinny (Emily Mortimer) as well as Tom (Cillian Murphy), the husband of one of Janet's co-workers, Janet and her husband Bill (Timothy Spall) do their best to try and cope with what will become a very turbulent and potentially fatal get-together.

Downfall (2004) - Movie Review (Reader Request)
Well, I certainly wasn’t expecting this.
Apparently, one of my followers on Facebook cared enough about my uneducated
opinion on films that he asked me to review today’s subject. Now, being outside
of my usual purview (films made in 2012 or earlier), I was a bit sceptical
about this. But, considering the still-prevalent Hitler meme that this film
spawned and how comparisons to Hitler
are still coming thick and fast from all sectors of the political spectrum, I
figure this would at least be interesting enough to warrant my own brand of
analysis. Strap yourselves in for some good old-fashioned depression fuel.
