2009’s Zombieland was a pretty big turning point for both
the people involved in its production and for its genre. As far as zombie
cinema is concerned, its highly self-referential and tongue-in-cheek approach
to the running dead makes for one of the bigger splashes the genre has seen
this side of the new millennium. And for its production crew, it was the first
big break that led to much bigger things: Jesse Eisenberg was on the cusp of
his defining role in The Social Network, Emma Stone was on her way to becoming
one of the best romantic leads of the modern era, writers Rhett Reese and Paul
Wernick’s first collaboration here would lead to great success with Life and
the Deadpool movies, and director Ruben Fleischer… well, I won’t hold Venom
against him, but he got a big boost from it too.

Before I Fall (2017) - Movie Review
It seems that films about time travel, and in particular
films involving time loops, are continuing to grow popular. While my affinity
for sci-fi should make me glad that such a staple of the genre is gaining
ground, I am held back by the simple fact that there are just far too many of
them. Looper, About Time, Edge Of Tomorrow, Predestination, ARQ, Doctor Strange
to a lesser extent, even previous adolescent-centric films like Project Almanac;
all in the space of five years. Yeah, I actually quite like most of these titles
but the basic formula that is at large between them is now starting to get
stale. Variety keeps the world interesting and unless we find a good
third-party premise that can exist beyond both this and the standard superhero
suspension of disbelief, it seems that we aren’t likely to get any. Will today’s
film at least keep things interesting or will the seams start showing?

Why Him? (2016) - Movie Review
The glamourous life of a film critic and spending more time
at the cinemas than I do awake in my own house means that I actually understand
very little of regular human interaction. That said, knowing how awkward social
situations can get to start with, I still understand why meeting the potential
in-laws is as nerve-wracking as it is. In fact, again with my lack of
experience in the matter in mind, it’s possibly the most awkward prospect of
any courtship and the myriad of possibilities (or even just the fear of those
possibilities) can lead to quite a bit of misery. As any good comedian knows,
misery makes for good comedy, and sure enough that scenario has made for pretty
decent rom-com material for many a decade now. Yeah, it may be old hat by now
but it has given birth to some good chuckles in the past. Of course, I didn’t realise exactly how old hat it was
until I sat down to watch this thing.

Dirty Grandpa (2016) - Movie Review
There is something inherently funny about watching older
people do things associated with younger people… I think. At the very least, it’s
humorous enough to warrant being the main subject matter for films, TV shows
and YouTube clips. Hell, I looked at a film that centred on that same branch of
comedy with Sisters. Of course, such a concept works better when it isn’t being
inflicted on someone with a tremendous amount of respect to his name. Like,
say, legendary actor Robert De Niro. While the man is still attached to some
decent work thanks to his connection with David O. Russell, he has still had a
serious low-point in his career of late. When you go from working with
visionaries like Scorsese and Coppola to being in Little Fockers, you know you’re
in trouble. So, time to take a look at the downward spiral of depressing screen
appearances as we peer into what is already being called the worst film of the
year… oh dear. This is Dirty Grandpa.
