2019 will likely go down as the year where Disney stretched
too far, and I’m not just talking about their ever-growing monopoly on modern
Western entertainment. What started out as interesting experiments to redefine
their stable of animated classics (or, more likely, extend their copyright
holding for said stories) has truly devolved into a collection of repeated and
bewildering mistakes. Of the three that made it to cinemas this year, only one of them left me with anything positive to say, and even then, it has paled
considerably since I first reviewed it.

The Beguiled (2017) - Movie Review
The plot: Amy (Oona Laurence), a
student of a Virginian girls school during the American Civil War, comes across
a wounded Union soldier in the woods surrounding the school. Amy brings the
soldier, named Corporal McBurney (Colin Farrell), to the school where the
headmistress Martha (Nicole Kidman) agrees to bring him in and get him better.
However, with Confederate soldiers frequently marching outside their gates, and
the girls at the school not being sure how much they can trust the Corporal,
they may have to come to a difficult decision about what to do with him.

Live By Night (2017) - Movie Review
The plot: Joe Coughlin (Ben Affleck) is a gangster in
Prohibition-era America. Against the wishes of his police captain father Thomas
(Brendan Gleeson), he gets involved in a gang war brewing in Boston between the
Irish Gang, led by Albert White (Robert Glenister), and the Italian Mafia, led
by Maso Pescatore (Remo Girone). As he becomes more embroiled in criminal life,
and opens himself up to doing some favours for Pescatore, he eventually gets
given an opportunity in Tampa, Florida that he grabs with both hands. However,
it seems that his days at the top are numbered, as a series of obstacles
present themselves that may prove too difficult for the nicest gangster in
town.
