Even though he hasn’t directed a narrative film before this
point (and no, the extended improv skit that is Bad Grandpa doesn’t count),
Jeff Tremaine seems the ideal pick for a rock star biopic like this. At the
forefront of one of MTV’s last truly iconic pillars with the Jackass franchise,
the man knows his gratuitous excess, a phrase that fits the wildness of Mötley
Crüe to a T. Especially considering how well the Jackass films did with
marrying soundtrack and visuals, putting heavy rock guitars against each grand
display of masochistic machismo. And while that certainly fits here to an
extent, the growing pains of Tremaine working in this format show through a
little too clearly.

Bird Box (2018) - Movie Review
It’s a little too easy to just cut to the chase and see this
as an attempt to cash in on A Quiet Place. Atmospheric horror tied directly to
one of the human senses, with heavy emphasis on parenthood through the
characters; the ties exist, is all I’m saying. But more so than that, this
concept feels like someone looked at The Happening and went “Okay, there has to
be a way to do this story without it being completely stupid.” A mysterious
force is making the human population commit suicide, and the few that remain
have to try and survive without getting exposed to that force. It’s an idea
that honestly is worth trying to make palatable, and the attempt made here
ain’t half bad.

Nerve (2016) - Movie Review
Using game shows, and more recently augmented reality games,
as a means of societal commentary is old hat by this point. Whether it’s the
dark satire of Death Race 2000, the hyper-machismo of The Running Man or even
the surreal tinge of comedy in Bad Wolf, an episode of Doctor Who, this isn’t
anything new. Not that being tried-and-true is something to be instantly
ashamed of; just that it means extra effort needs to be made in order for the
work to stand out. Well, with the ever-increasing proclivity of the Internet
and its many, many outlets, specifically social media, YouTube and even the
fascination surrounding Pokémon Go!, maybe it’s time for such a commentary to be
made anew. We can only hope that this film is capable of delivering on that. Spoiler
alert: No, it isn’t; not by a long shot.
